My Dad's '53 F350 is listed on E-bay, and there has been a few questions on the overhead valve 6 cylinder in there. Was the flathead 6, and the OHV 6 cylinder available in 53?? was it a mid-year change? only apply to certain models or was it all across the board (F100-F350)??
Mark914,
There's no way my family would tolerate me buying another truck. I'm doing work right now on my own 53. If it turns out that the high bidder has no interest in that cute little 215 six, let me know...I'd love to make an offer on it or some of it's parts. Good luck with the sale, jvmcc
The confusion that some folks have is that you could buy a 53 F100 with a 239 v8 Flathead, or the 239 V8 OHV. Simular to the Fordomatic transmission - late model 53 F100 offered it with the 239 OHV, but 54 was the first full year with the Fordomatic as a standard option.

Incorrect. There was no 239 OHV in 53 models, they may have been available in late 53 but they were 54 models.
A problem with ID is that some states title year of manufacture and others as model year.
In Canada the 54 models had the flathead 239 until late in the model year.
My March 53 release date truck shop manual shows the Fordomatic, I have no idea when they were available at the dealer.
Hense the confusion...... my uncle purchased a 53 new from the dealer in late 1953. He still has it and the VIN states that it is a 53. He claims that the 239 OHV is the original engine - "never been touched". Go figure....
some states did title by year not model nj was one of them , cheby had the same thing with the early vet as i remember 54 with a 53 title chaged not long later to model year. my just gotten 53f100 has a flat v8 never been touched yet farmer had it in a barn 1 owner truck, the 239 ohv came out as 54 model engine
Guys, I know that the 239 EBU OHV is a 54 engine, however, strange things happen. I've had my 54 F100 for nearly thirty years and I'm still surprised by finding things that "we all thought" we know for facts. I told my uncle nearly 15 years ago that he was nuts, so he had to prove it to me. Sure enough a 239 EBU as the original engine in a 53.
Over the weekend I called my uncle to find out more info: Turns out that he special ordered the pick-up through my grandfathers IHC dealership late in November of 53. He remembers that he could save "a few buck" if he got the 53 verses the 54 but either would have the same engine in it.
