T18 problems

I bought a 1982 F350 with a T18 that is very noisy in 4th gear ,It will make your ears hurt. The noise is when your on the throttle and just about goes away when you let off the throttle. My question is will a simple rebuild take care of the problem ?It seems the rebuild kits come with all the bearings and and gaskets or do I have a gear problem . I don't want to crack it open only to find its not worth repairing and I should have just looked for another unit. Does anyone have any experence with these transmissions ? If so give me your thoughts.

I have redone a couple. As far as the noise, my guess would be that the bearings are shot, and therefore messing with the contact pattern for the gears. This is where the noise comes from. Rebuilding them isn't too bad if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, and have a book. Also, Take lots of pictures when you are taking it apart. You may refer to them later. Good luck, Ted.

The couple you have done did it take anything more than what came in a rebuild kit?

I went the really cheap way and pulled it apart, inspected it and put everything back together. I had to handcut my gaskets, and bought new seals. I just inspected the bearings and put them back in. I can't tell you what comes in a kit. Another thought is to look for one for cheap. I bought my second one for $75. I would say that a rebuild kit will run you over $100 easy. Just a thought, Ted

Just a thought, before you spend money on a rebuild kit. Drain the oil from the trans. Put oil stabilizer (any brand ie. Lucas, Hi-Tach etc.) and fresh gear oil in and see if that quiets it down. My t-18 has bad synchro's and I get away with using the oil stabilizer. I no longer have a problem.

I will try it , at least draining it maybe I will find alot of metallic particles that might indicate bearing failure .
