85 5-spd problems

I'm new here and I have a 85' 2 weel drive ranger that the 5-spd transmission had decied to kong out on. Everything except for 5th and reverse works. Is this something that can be repaired easily, or should I get a new transmission? I read somewhere that those transmissions (mazda) were not ment for the torque that a 2.8 6 cyl. puts out, so is this a problem that's gonna keep popping up?
