'91 5.0L HO question

My dad is in the process of swapping in a 5.0L HO V8/AOD tranny into his '85 F150 (with a Big Six/manual tranny). The truck is gonna be used for mostly around-town driving with maybe the occasional hwy trip. What specific mods can be done to maximize fuel economy and still provide about 250 hp/ 300 lb-ft? Thanks in advance.

full length headers, good 2.25 in. exhaust (flowmasters) and maybe a good flowing intake. is it carbed or injected? many possibilites either way..... also the gear in the truck should be around a 3.50 which is good for mild towing and still gets good mileage. with that AOD you could even get away with a 4.11 gear and maybe add a mild shift kit (definitely add a cooler) to the trans......

The engine is FI. My brother-in-law also said something about putting the Mustang rear end on the truck. So you would say to go ahead and put a tranny cooler on it, too? And would going with a 2.5" exhaust be overkill for this application? Thanks for the advice!

Think trucks are 31 spline while cars are 28 if your just changing the center sections. Also think the rearends are different widths and you'd have to weld on spring perchs for those leafs.

I found out that they didn't take the rear end, after all. Just the engine, tranny, wiring harness, and computers.

Any advice on the exhaust? Looking for a balance between power and fuel economy.
