Okay, I did in fact search the forums (may have missed it and if so, please forgive me) looking for the answer or a solution. Have a 2000 Expy, Eddie Baur 4AWD, 5.4. We live in Kentucky so our winter here is just now getting to the mid 30's at night. THe engine fan starts up when I start the truck, slows down, revs up again (I am NOT touching the accelerator) and you hear the thing cycling from one speed to another. It didn't even do this during the summer. Now, I am not running the heat or A/C, nothing is on, not even the vent, so I am trying to figure out what could be the cause and then find a way to fix it, hopefully, without having to take it in to the service dept. We live in a small town and have only one Ford dealer so his service rates tend to exceed even those of a larger city (no competition I guess...) Any ideas or suggestions would be a great help. Also, if you need more details, please let me know. THanks all, Charles. P.S. - Isn't the steering column supposed to lock???

When started these engines "rev" really high for a few moments then RPM's drop down in several steps. It is perfectly normal. The only thing I can think of is your fan clutch is malfunctioning.
Fan clutch possibly? Is this something that a mere novice can attend to, or do I need to refinance my house, buckle down and see the dealer? By the way, thanks for assistance.
