O.D. trans conversion???
I live out in the country so most roads are 50 MPH or greater. I still need the towing power for a animal trailer and car hauler. I think leaving the differential gears the same would be best, but getting an OD would be best like .76:1 fifth gear. (4 th gear in auto I guess)
Ok what if I also added F.I. instead of carb as well. Would this help or to costly?
Thanks in advance to all who reply.
If you have a 4x2 there are a lot of options to basically any transmission you want with the new modular bellhousing's from McLeod industries, www.mcleodind.com. For example, I'm in the midst of gathering parts to put a Tremec TKO behind my 400M in my hotrod.
There is a phone number on this website, seriously check them out, i have had my tranny in now for almost a year and not a single problem, and i race from time to time so i told him what i wanted it for and he built it for me.
I bought an AOD for my 1976 F100 Custom and put in a 302 from Jasper Racing it is pushing out about 350 Hp, after the AFR heads are on it will push 450 HP @ 780 FT LBS of Tourque, i do have some pics of my truck on here somewhere, but i cannot seem to find them, if you want them let me know ill send them to u Talk to u Soon.
A trans from any newer pickup with 460/OD will fit into yours with some work. With a manual, you will need to fabricate a hydrolic clutch - which has been done, search the past threads. For a newer auto, you will need a stand alone computer to control the shifts, which can be bought from several aftermarket companies. Both will require fabbing a crossmember and custom driveshaft.
If you want EFI too, then the easiest may be to get a newer wreck with a EFI 460/od and swap the entire drivetrain, wiring harness and computer into your pickup.
There's 2 good tech articles you should read - link at top right of page. One is swapping a '88 EFI 460 into 73-79 pickup and the other is swapping a OD trans into a '79 Bronco (which is the same drivetrain as a pickup).
Be sure to count the costs. I've considered the NV4500 swap into my '73 390 and it'll run me about $1500 for trans and extra parts. It'll take 5+ years to recover that cash through gas mileage savings... But it sure would be nice.
