HI All, Last post my 92 Aerostar's A4LD would not start from a dead stop in OD but would lockup at 45+ mph. The trans was losing fluid but no exterior leaks. Reverse was fine. Shifted fine 1'st through 3'rd in Drive. The vacuum modulator was replaced and there was trans fluid in the vacuum line. BUT, now it slips like crazy when shifting from 2'nd to 3'rd. If I let up on the gas it will shift into 3'rd. Do I need to adjust the vacuum modulator? What happens if the pin is lost? I think it is in there but not sure. Sure hoping to hear from someone. The black pin should have come out when you remove the old modulator. You have to put it in the new modulator before you install the whole thing back in. Remove the modulator and use a magnet to pull that pin out. Either that pin was missing or it might have gotten caught *****ided in there. Just a guess.
I had not run my '91 3.0 for a while, cranked it up yesterday to get it smogged. Weather here was cold (for us), about 32 F.
I noticed it seemed slow to shift when cold, and the 2-3 shift wouldn't go until I let up on the gas. Is this normal?
After warming up it was better.
Ray Mac.
PS--BTW-- I noticed that even when warm it didn't go into lockup until about 45mph. wish there was a way to get it to lock up sooner, also wish I could lock it up when pulling in 3rd.
fud: The problem is most likely your governor. Easy job, just looks scary. You have to take the tailshaft housing off but you don't have to drop the trans. Last time I did one the governor cost me $30. Don't waste your time rebuilding it. Good luck.
