boost gauge

i just went into my local auto parts store to buy a boost gauge, he told me he would have to special order one in and it would be like $200!!! he said the ones he had there wouldnt work because they need to build up vaccum first, and he would have to special order ones in that are just "instant boost", that was coming from his mouth, are boost gauges for our truck really that expensive?

Heck no! I got mine off of ebay for $47. Autometer Z boost gauge and it works great.
Someone's trying to give you the shaft.

Any boost gauge will work, you just don't need the vacuum side of the gauge that is on most boost gauges. Most boost gauges with a vacuum scale will also be barely adequate for a stock PSD. Gauges with boost and vacuum are for gas motors and while the boost side of the scale will work fine in a diesel, the boost scale will probably only go to 20 psi or so. That is because gas motors rarely see the boost levels that even a stock PSD can make. Diesel boost gauges aren't $200 though. Get a good 35 psi boost gauge from any of the sponsors and you'll be fine.

Any boost gauge should work. No need to build up vacuum first, that's ridiculous.

While your local guy may not know much about diesels - I'd bet he wasn't trying to rip you off. I checked on Autometer gauges at my local automotive place - and they were more than 2 times what they are sold in my Summit catalog for. Couldn't believe it - but I personally know the guys that work there - and they said sorry - you'd be better off ordering them somewhere - that's the cheapest they get them for. It's a shame...

My AutoMeter C2's are in the 200$ neighborhood. The boost gauge comes with a map sensor to signal the gauge witch is electronic. This means no flutter and no noise in the cab. The pyro includes the thermocouple, no extra parts to buy.
