91 f150 s/b 5.0.....stoping from hway speed noticed some smoke coming from passenger side rear brake.. drum and wheel were very hot.after jacking rear found i couldent spin tire so backed off the star wheel till wheel was able to turn free..the drum is still getting warm but not like it was and there is still a bit of drag...it also feels like the peddle is a little harder to depress then before..parking brake only goes down a click or two.. before it would click 5 or 6 times epeddle releases fine and comes all the way up and there is some slack in cable when it is released...had all the brakes serviced a few months ago and everythings been fine till now...want to pull off the drum but i dont know what to look for...any ideas on what to check or what could be causeing this....thanks
It sounds like the brakes got a little over-adjusted. They're self-adjusting, and they usually err on the side of caution. (i.e. too loose instead of too tight)
To adjust them, jack each wheel up. The shoes should drag lightly all the way around when you spin the tire by hand.
The parking brake cable could be sticking and the brake shoes are dragging. These cables are always a problem, but are cheap enough ($25 at Canadian Tire). I tried to restore a pair on my '90, for 3 days I poured oil at them, worked them back and forth. Finally gave up and visited CT. ...Terry
Thanks For The Responce Guys...overkill I Think You Hit It Right On..pulled The Drum Off And Everything Looked Ok..no Broken Springs Or Anything Else I Can See..did Find That The Parking Brake Lever Wasent Returning Back All The Way After Settng The Parking Brake..the Spring Seemed To Be Ok So I Figure It Must Be The Cable Binding Up Somewere..was Able To Push Open The Pbrake Lever By Taping On It With A Hammer..also Noticed When Pushing Down On Pbrake Peddle That Leaver Dident Move Much (close)..so For Now I Disconnected The Pbrake Cable For The Passenger Side At The Adjuster And Am Useing Only One Wheel With It On...(or Mabey I Should Of Disconnected It At The Liver Itself)???...hope It Will Be Ok For Now....thanks
