04 PSD 4x4, 2200 miles--after sitting all night, turning the key on and waiting for the plugs to warm up, there is a horrible sound coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment... it cycles on for about 20 seconds then cycles off. It appears to be a pump of some type, but doesn't look like it would have the guts to be a fuel pump. It is pretty small and halfway between the passenger side headlight and firewall right on the passenger side fender. It only seems to do it when it is very cold outside. If you use your imagination, it sounds like an interior fan with the bearing going out of it. What is it!?

That would be your vacuum pump
And yes, it makes a nasty sounding noise, but it is nothing to be worried about.
Dude, you are the man! Yeah, it never did it until it was cold outside, and then it kinda freaked me out. Sounded like my old 70 Chevelle I had in high school... costs a lot more though....Thanks for the help...
Run your Heater/AC controls back and forth between vents with the key on, engine off, and you'll exhaust the stored vacuum and the pump will cycle on.. It's not temp sensitive.. Kinda a high priced slot car motor... You may also notice a 'grunt' sound, (if your foot is off the brake) that's the ABS controller..
