Hello, I own a 66 f-100 2wd with a 4 speed trans .It has a 78 302 that was put in buy the former owner .The engine is worn out, I have a 300 six that I would like to install. What all would I have to do to change them out? THANKS
I agree with John, hard to say for certain, but generally where a 302 was a 4.9L (300 CID I-6) will fit without much change.
I'd consider getting rid of 4spd if it's a granny, unless you pull stumps or somthin' with it, for a 3spd or a 3 or 4 spd OD instead. I don't particularily like the 300. 4.9L engines but I will admit they outpull a 302 with ease. They make huge torque!
I put a 3.50 rear behind my 4.9L with 5spd, Manual, OD, Tranny It woke that engine up fantastically. Mph & Mpg both increased considerably.
Truck came OEM with 4.9 & 5 gear OD w/ 4.10:1 Dana rear gear. Losing 4.10 Dana is something I should have done a couple years ago. I'm getting nearly 18 mpg, opposed to 13mpg I used to get with 4.10:1 gears. I also have more mph in every gear, and no problem "leaving" with 3.50s. I admit this is a beater-shop truck, it does "NO" heavy work, or towing. But for what it does do, the taller rear gear was a vast improvement IMHO. I am nego'g for 3.25s I'd like to try rightnow, and see how they work. . .
