Rough Idle Problem......

My truck developed a rough idle problem Saturday and then cleared up on Sunday. Last NIght while waiting on the girlfriend at the local steakhouse, the rough idle came back. I popped the hood and while listening, I unplugged the EGR Valve and magicly it went away like I flipped a switch. So my question is, what does the EGR Valve have to do with causing this rough idle?

Thanks in Advance..........

PSD,
Welcome to the "rough idle/surge/cutting off" club of which i am a member. My EGR valve was supposed to be the culprit of my problem also, but after having it repalced 3 times i still have the intermittent problem. The last time i had the truck in, i disconnected the EGR in the parking lot before ever even starting it and the problem was back before i trveled 20 miles.

There is a huge amount of info on this excellent site including info on the proper disconnection of the EGR valve.

I'm currently trying to have my truck replaced under the VA lemon law for this problem. Good Luck!

This has happened to my truck before and always has cleared up by disconnecting the EGR. I dont have a Surge under acceleration, however, I did but has been fixed by replacing the VGT Solenoid.

Hi
I have had the same issues, rough idle, romping, surging and cutting out. The dealership is giving me an upgrade to the pcm software which addresses the egr programming. They said the egr freaks out and the current software doesnt handle it well. My truck is an 04 built in early may. The egr thew 3 codes which I should have them in the next day or 2. They also told me that they can only do so much which FMC will pay for for now, so I pray and hope the issues are gone. If not, we go back again but this time I will carry a camcorder to get the issue on film so they see and hear the issue when it does happen, because as usual the truck ran like a champ and didnt once romp/surge or cut out. Just got to laugh about it.

I went thru this with a drivers side upper ball joint that the factory installed in the 03 and 04 ex's that was causing drifting and weird steering responses. It took 6 weeks for them to find it, 4 steering boxes later, only to have a tech person fly in and tell the service dept about the ball joint issue, and shazzam it was fixed.

I feel sorry for the FMC service depts at the dealerships. They can only do so much, only what FMC allows them to do at a given time. The dealership service manager told me this after he saw how frustrated I was as a customer with my ball joint issue and now the surging/romping/cutting out problem I have now. My dealerships service writers take alot of crap from people and they still smile and try to do the best job possible. I still think the Super Duties and Excursions are awesome trucks.
