I'm looking at an 86 bronco with a 4 speed automatic. Nice interior, nice exterior with nice straight body and chrome. Problem? The transmission bangs in and out of gear. The guy who is selling the truck swears this is normal for this particular transmission. Is it?

sorry about posting in the wrong place. I'll stick a post in the Bronco section I just found, too. But in order to get an answer, please humor me and let me continue here for just this once:
Beautiful bronco but it jolts into overdrive when accelerating and then when slowing down it jolts out of overdrive and then jolts out of each successive gear as you continue to slow down. The guy swears he's had 3 broncos all with the same shifting feel, but I just cant believe it without hearing it from someone else too.
I just had my e40d rebuilt and had a shift kit installed in it. It shifts hard now and thats a food thing due to the weak tranny. the harder it shifts the better the holds the gears together; that is only the case with a controlling shift kit. If you dont have a shift kit, the tranny's planetaries could be jarring around too much and cause them to break. Im assuming you dont have an e40d due to the year of the bko in question. I dont have any experience with yours and maybe My advice is questionable, but I suggest you look on for another bronco, or talk his price down to save some money for a new tranny.
