I've got an 87' Ranger that used to store a 2.0 under the hood (carb'ed I-4), and swaped in a 2.9. it took me a while to get that sucker goin', I had the 4 banger coil in it, and I guess those don't work for V-6???....so I put the V-6 coil in, and it fired up and went GREAT!, just like it did before I pulled it out of the Bigfoot Cruiser Ranger that I rolled over. Now it won't fire up anymore, it's as though the timing is HORRIBLY off....like one or 2 cylinders will fire, sometimes, I've taken that distributer out like 50 times, and it's probly in 180 off, so I move the plugs 180, and try it, if it don't work I move the dist. one way, then the other, then if it still doesn't work, I move em' back 180, and try it, and move the dist, and try, but still nothing.......what do U guys think?......I pretty much know 2.9's like the back of my hand, cuz I've worked on them ALOT, between the 2 or 3 Rangers I've put together....when I say put together I mean I recieved them as bare frames, w/ god knows what cut off them, and/or missing
Are you sure your getting spark and have fuel pressure? Then I would go to getting #1 to TDC compression and setting the distributor back in pointing to #1. Just starting with the basics.
gpt plenty of feul, and plenty of spark, just that the spark isn't at the right time.....
well how can I get #1 TDC,.....there are 2 of them, one on the compression, and one on the exhaust.......how do I know I've got the right one?

well I'm in no rush of gettin' the vavle covers off......the last time I had the chance to see that kinda stuff was when I took off the timing cover, cuz I thought the chain had skipped a tooth.....but it didn't..... :-)
well ...I guess I'll just HAVE to put that junk 302 I got layin' around in it then.....shucks!...lol
Pull the number one plug and put your thumb over the hole. Crank it over and you will feel when it is on compression, that will get you close, set it to the mark and get her fired up.
Dave
so I'm guessing that when it's on the exhaust stroke there won't be much pressure on my thumb, but on the comp. stroke there will be a noticable difference?
alright, well I don't plan to actually get back to working on the Ranger till Spring......I'm too busy w/ my bronco right now....but thanx for the idea! :-)
