I have 2004 350 XL with steel wheels. I recently purchased a set of Lariat wheels from an Excursion (five pocket aluminum). What I'm wondering is are my lugnuts going to work on new wheels or do they use a different type on aluminum wheels? Thanks.
If your aluminum wheels have holes that are sunk into the wheel, you'll need to get lug nuts that fit down into the holes and tight against the wheel. Plain lug nuts won't look as nice against an aluminum wheel, either.
I'm not sure what type of lugnuts the Excursion aluminum wheels use.
Most aftermarket aluminum wheels use a mag-style lug nut. Mag wheel nuts have a long shank that fits deep into the wheel's lug holes. There is a washer that fits over the shank and goes between the wheel and the head of the nut. I believe these are what Fordlover was describing.
The nuts for steel wheels are called 'acorn' nuts when they are finished with a capped end, or they can be open-ended. They have a cone shape (chamfer) on the end that goes against the wheel and the wheel has a countersink that the cone fits into.
Using 'acorn' nuts on a mag-style wheel that takes a nut with a shank can damage the wheels and the nuts can come loose easily. Also, the new trucks use a 14mm lug. The thread pitch is different depending on the year though and I don't remember what it is either. Guess I'm not much help eh?

The fact that they are off an Excursion doesn't matter they are the same part # as a truck lariat wheel and as far as what the lugnuts look like they will be covered by the chrome caps. Also there are no recesses around the wheel.
