I have a 95 ranger ext cab 4x4 with a 4.0 5 speed. I had a clunking noise when I would drive in 4 wheel drive. So, I just replaced my upper and lower ball joints and u joints in the front end last week. It is still clunking when I drive in 4 wheel drive. I am very confused. What else could make a clunking noise? If my maual hubs went bad would it clunck? It sounds like its comming from the front right side.
if you are turning sharp while in 4wd, it will "clunk" some, just the nature of the beast. i recently put new front axle joints in mine and it seems to clunk more when cornering in the feild then before. thats the downside to having u-joints vs cv joints on the front axle steering knucles. almost wish i could retrofit cv joints to my axle, since i run smaller than stock size tires during the winter when i use 4wd the most anyhow dont think i need the strength of a u-joint and the c.v joint would allow for turning at full lock without the binding you get with the stock setup. i dont think your hubs could be causing any problems, the autos tend to click when they go bad, never known anyone to blow a manual hub unless they had huge tires and were extreme wheeling, then its time for a 44 straight axle conversion! hope this helps. Dave.
I had a Bronco II that was making a clunking from the front in 4x4. Turned out my brake pads had worn so thin and the tension springs had busted and one of the pads had slipped out of place. Changed the pads and all was good. Hopefully yours turns out to be something so simple.
I have the same problem, Poom. I have a '96 that I bought new in '95. It never made a clunking noise when turning until a few months ago. I converted to manual hubs a while back. I was thinking that it was the U-joints, but you said you replaced those! The 4WD works, but when I turn, especially to the left one of the front wheels clunks terribly. I hope that someone can tell me what to do other than change the U-joints, as this didn't work for you.
