I decided to change the fuel filter this morning, as I have many times before. After the fuel filter change, I was on my way to Home Depot and noticed a major drop in power. I pulled over and decided to have a look under the hood. For whatever reason I left the truck running and got out to open the hood...when the hood opened I was showered with diesel fuel!!
To make a long story short; I did not get the filter cartridge all the way down and therefore the cap did not get sealed all the way. Diesel fuel spraying everywhere.
What a mess all over the engine compartment and me!
At least you will remember to make sure you have it all the way in and get the cap sealed all the way next time. Possibly even make other people double check their work when they do theirs.
It will certainly cut the crud but now you need some deluted simple green or the like to cut the fuel. I had a O-ring fail to seat but It sprayed on key on so it was a minor bath.
My engine compartment got a diesel shower too when an o-ring failed. Had the oil changed before leaving on a long trip pulling a big trailer. I saw the "mechanic" put in a new fuel filter then pull it and reinstall. Didn't think much about it. The O-ring failed 700 miles later in Idaho on a Sunday. Had to lay over to Monday for a shop to open for a new filter. The parts guy told me that you can't reinstall a filter without a new o-ring once it has been tightened. Since then no one touches my fuel filter but me.
That diesel smell stayed with us for the two weeks we were on the road. Should have tried to clean it up but was on the road every day.
I did not know about the 0-ring being sensitive until that happened. Hope someone sees these messages rather than getting a diesel shower.
By the way, I love watching cars hurry to pass my "slow" trailer just before starting up a hill, then that 7.3 PSD blows their doors off halfway up. Is it just me or does anyone else smile when this happens?
Had a similar experience the ONE time I had someone else change mine... rjwood5, my favorites are the Grapevine & El Cajon in So. CA, although I'm usually lucky to hold 55 with a load. I especially like passing the Dirges & Shovys.
I spent a little time ( and a few dollars ) at the car wash last night. I still have lots of diesel smell but its a little cleaner. The real bad thing is the smell in the cab...I guess I got a little on the interior somewhere???

It's probably worked it's way into the heater/airconditioner housing. Only way to clean that out is to dissassemble and clean thoroughly.
That seal on the fuel filter swells once it had been in contact with diesel. I discovered that one day when I open my fuel canister to check the color of the filter. I also discovered that you cannot buy a seal without buying the whole filter.
There are those who have done it and those who will. Some Gunk and water and time will make the smell go away, at least on thh truck. I don't know if you can ever get the smell off your skin and out of your clothes
