87 460 timing problems???

87 460 timing problems???

I installed a new distributor and I think the dist is off a tooth. The truck is running real rich. I used a timing light to dial in the 8 degrees btdc. It has the ignition module. If I am off a tooth would the engine still run and would I be able to get the timing light to read the right number due to the ignition module being preset. I have an lm-1 and it is reading 30 + AFR. Any help would be much aprecaited.

If you are able to get the distributor to adjust to factory specs then you aren't off a tooth. Normally you would off 90 or more degree's if you couldn't adjust the dist. to get 8 BTDC. The other common problem is installing the dist. 180 degrees off from the cam. But since you are running and don't have any back fires that you mentioned your in the right spot. "I have an lm-1 and it is reading 30 + AFR" This needs a little more explaination though. What is an "lm-1" and "30 + AFR"?

An lm1 is a datalogging air to fuel meter. 30 is the the air to fuel mixture and also shows lambda. Any other ideas why it would run so rich. I even turned in the screws on the carb and it doesn't change the reading by much.
It has new plugs, wires and distributor.
