I have a 2001 Edge with the 4.0. i was wondering what was the cheapest way to remove the speed limiter? I'm not really trying to gain any performance, all i want to do is remove the limiter. the truck has lots of power and a 120mph speedo, there has to be a simple way to remove the limiter without paying $250-300 for a chip. any help is greatly appreciated.
ok i probably exagerated on the price, but i still want to know the cheapest way. i thought about exhaust or a different filter maybe, but these wont do me any good without removing the limiter. what if theres an emergency and i need to outrun the cops or something... i'll be screwed.....hahahaha..just a joke, seriously i wnt to remove it as cheap as possible. if this means using a chip then tell me what the cheapest is, and where i can get it.
I heard a rumor all you have to do is remove the VSS sensor on the rear axle. Only prob is your speedo won't work at all after that but your cpu will have no way of knowing how fast you are going so the rev limiter will be gone.
I think ford can re-program your limiter just like they can re-program your cpu when you go to taller tires.. I was told the limiter corresponds with the speed rating of your tires and that is why they have such a low limiter on trucks because they usually do not have high speed tires on them.

Supposedly JET makes a chip that will add ten miles per hour to the top speed of the truck..Installed it supposedly sells for 200 and adds power through the rpm range. This info came from a 2000 4.0 owner that I happened to speak with on the street. I'd be interested in hearing more on this. Anyone ??
Have you had any luck doing away with the speed limiter on your Edge?
I'm having the same problem. My Edge shuts down around 93 MPH and the rear diff. is a 3:73.
Thanks for your reply. In my research the"superchip" seems to be the most popular wilth everyone seeming to like it xcept for one reader who says it fried his computer. I'm suprised I haven't found more on this. I'm guessing it would void the warranty if Ford found out but I can see no reason why you couldn't just change it back to stock if you had a problem. Anyone else out there ??
BUT, if you snip the wire in the VSS that sends the speed signal to the ECU & install a simples on-off toggle switch, you can bypass the VSS when you want to make a "speed run", & switch it back on again to not adversely affect driveabilty & not trigger the CEL.
Are you using the Ford shop manuel to get your information ?? I guess if you disconnect that wire you lose the abs & the speedo too. Keep these answers coming guys, there has got to be another way. Is the best reference book the Ford shop manual ??

Thanks Ken, I did forget to add that to my last post.
Personally, I think a Superchip is the way to go, safely, and you'll get the added bonus of some improved performance, to boot.
Either the Diablo or the Superchip will do the trick. The Diablo tends to be little more agreesive with the timing and the Superchip a little more agreesive with the shift, though this varies by ECU code.

I like to have the Ford manuals, they have the most information, the CD ones are very nice. The chip is the other way to get rid of the limiter, you will need to run 93 octane with a chip.
