Tail light madness

I have an 89 BII 4x4 etc.. Im having problems with the rear tail lights. i recently got pulled over for no brake lights. Heres the symptoms. running lights work. driver side turn signal works, pass. side turn signal doesnt work. Usually the driver side brake light works. Now neither work and i dont know what to look for ground? bad connection? Ive replaced all the bulbs didnt fix anything. It looks as if the pass side brake light stays on all the time cuz its alot brighter then the driver side. Does anybody have any ideas? if you need more info let me know id really like to get this fixed!

Considering what is and isnt working, it sounds like a bad multifunction switch.
The turn signal lever is attached to the multifunction switch
Do you have a wiring diagram so that you can test the switch??

I had a similar problem with the brake lights. I found that when I pulled the switch out and depressed the plunger it worked, so i just added a .015 shim from a spark plug gap set I had laying around, glued it in place and life was good.
good luck

check the connections for corrosion? Look inside where the bulb sets..although it may have factory grease in it..it may need to be cleaned out and new diaeletric great put in. I had this problem before and it was the connections..the old grease needed to be cleaned out and new stuff put in with a new bulb.

See my first post. Removing the switch is very simple, your Haynes manual will tell you how to do it. Haynes calls it "steering column switches."
