I have seen where you have to install a 5 inch exhaust after installing a tuner to keep the egt's down. Is it cat. back of turbo back and where do I find it?
I have been considering an exhaust upgrade on my '05 PS, but am hesitant to do so because of the exhaust back pressure sensor used on the fuel mgmt. system of these trucks. When you install a free flowing exhaust it would be logical that you would also lower your backpressure. What affect would this have on the computer control of the turbo system ? If the sensor did not see the pressure it is calibrated for, how could it give valid info to the computer ?
You know the old saying "junk in/junk out. Essentially wouldn't this make the computer give false commands to the VGT valve that controls the vanes in the turbo? David.

Most systems are 4" with a 5" tip only. As for back pressure, leave the CAT in and it should give you enough IMO. I have replaced everything but the CAT in my '04 and my mileage has improved by 2 mpg after I quit putting my foot in the pedal every 30 seconds. Leave it stock if you are really worried though, I did not buy my SD because I was worried about fuel mileage.
Yeesh tim i hope your flame suit is up to date with a comment about a v 10's milege.
Our suits here are in the 6.0 forum are resistant against flaming, small arms fire, fragmentation, intercontinental ballistic missles, cruise missles, rockets, and all forms of hydrogen fission weapons
Well no disrespect to the v-10 guys, I was one for three years...love the truck, however it never got any good MPG...If I was a rich man. I would lower an X lots of tire on it huge breaks, v-10 and go road racing...I did a number of laps with mine on a road course, has a bit of a push when you get it in real deep...but fun, did I mention I would pull it to the track with my 6.0
Ben,
Should I assume that a 4" Cat back would be the way to go? I am still debating which way to do the deal, and it seems the 4" down pipe really doesn't seem to be a benefit prior to the Cat because we need a certain amount of back pressure, but from the Cat is where the larger exhaust benefits are gained in EGT temperature drop and MPG gains.
These are just my observations only over a LOT of reading in the past year with my 6.0 and discussions with friends and fellow owners.
I will keep watching this thread with interest.

I put the downpipe on and I really don't think there is much of a difference between the stock one and the aftermarket ones other than they are mandrel bent and an increase in turbo whine. If I had it to do over again I would have left the stock one on. I did not do the cat delete so I don't think it changed anything.
Ben,
My plan is to do a Cat back system, replacing everything from there back. I have been in a friends 2004 F250 with a turbo back system without the Cat or muffler(a Bully Dog). It was surprisingly quiet at idle, just a more noticable turbo whistle, but I didn't much care for the sound once he really hit it. It did seem to spool up quicker, but my taste would tend toward using the kit supplied muffler. I have a suspicion the noise on the highway would get bothersome.

ps. I am not against Loud- I have a 1966 427 Superformance Cobra replica, but I do like a "quality" sound. There is a difference.
I asked the custom exhaust man in my area about this issue, as I wanted the 5" also, he stated that he doesnt recomend removing the cat because of the sensor??? So it would be pointless to do a turbo back with the cat still inline.....I dunno what Im gonna do.....so many questions, so many different answers....I might just throw my hands in the air, and just leave everything stock......without the frustrations, I might just add a few years to my life!!!LOL

I would find another exhaust man. There is no sensor on the cat on the F250. I don't think it would be pointless. The only mod I have in mind is to put a free flowing muffler.
