Turning off O/D

I have a 98' with the 5 speed auto. I have been told that it is better for the transmission if you turn off the overdrive if you are not going to be driving over 45 mph. I have heard this a couple of different times, anyone else ever heard of this. Is it true, or just a myth?

I would say myth, turn it off if you are towing or going over the rockies.

In city traffic it's a good practice. Otherwise, there's not much point.

My 2000 4.0L 4x4 auto has that of course..and I used to always shut it off unless I was getting on the interstate 50mph plus. I didn't like the change in shift pattern when it was on for local driving -50mph.

Now that gas is so expensive..I leave it on.
