need to know if my `89 clubwagon 5.0L has a heater control valve and where it is exactly? please be specific with you answer. van does not have the rear heat option. thanks
If there is a valve it will be in the hoses between the water pump and heater core. I don't think youe '89 has one. There is a cable on the blend door inside the cab that can get sticky or loose over time and cause problems. I'd make sure that the heater core is getting hot before doing much else. DOes it have A/c?
thanks pfogle, yes it does have A/C. I opened the heater core housing and felt all over the core, and it is very warm but not as hot as the radiator. Heater Core temperature is 140 with the Blower OFF. Shouldn`t the Heater Core temp be just about as hot as the radiator? I pushed on the Blend Door and it is fully closed for sure. ???
feel both heater hoses, if they are both warm, core is ok, if one is hot and other cooler core is probally plugged, do not attempt to flush just replace it
I have a similar problem. Hot hose going into firewall, cold hose coming out. It's a 1990 model Econoline. The Chilton's Ford manual is next to useless in tracing the problem. Is there a water control valve in there somewhere? Must be... can't see how it would be a good idea to have hot water going through the heater core all the time, the air-con would have to fight with it in summer.
Great work Forder. Could you please post a summary of the procedure here? I'm v. interested as my van is the same model as yours. Does your van have air conditioning?
Threadwatchers: I assume that the water flows thru the TOP hose into the heater core and back out the BOTTOM hose. Correct?
Also, I'd always thought running hoses higher than the top of the radiator was a no-no, as the water pump can't provide enough lift. But the E150 seems to bust that one wide open with its heater hoses running right up to the height of the cowl. It looks like the heater hose splits just under the cowl to feed the front and rear systems. Is that correct?
Hope to get the heater fixed tomorrow while my buddy is back in town and can provide an extra set of hands.
