Question 98 expy problem

I bought a used 98 4.6 expy in July of 03 with 110,000 miles on it. I had some electrical problems when I first got it that the dealer took care of. Other than normal maint and a set of tires the only thing I have had to have fixed was a new right front axle shaft. It now has 134,000 on it and last monday the check engine light came on. I took it to a friends garage and it read a problem with first shift sensor in transmission. He dropped the pan and for pieces of metal in it. Tomorrow he is going to take it out and get me a breakdown of repair costs, he says 12-1500 for repairs. Is it reasonable to rebuild a high mile auto trans or should I replace it?

Not sure, but I'm guessing a new trans will cost you nearly twice that or more...it's a judgment call on your part - no one can decide for you.

I just blew the 5.4 in my 98 @ 104k miles...Ford will put a new 5.4 in it for about $4600...I'm debating that route or one from a salvage yard - the newer engine w/warranty will definitely provide more peace of mind...but it's alot of $$$.

Good luck

all fixed

Got my expy back today $1500 to replace converter and rebuild. Mechanic said problem was caused by metal particles from the converter going through the system and took out first gear. 1 year or 12,000 warranty on work. Nice to have it back.
