If it's just a torn boot, you wont have to replace the driveaxle. Just pulling the driveaxle doesn't look like a real tough job, but it's fairly involved for replacing the boot and regreasing the CV joint. I've never done it, but the Haynes manual is really great for this kind of thing. I recommend getting a haynes manual and attacking the job yourself.
Having worked in auto parts for several years, I am not a fan of split boots or replacement boots. I was kind of hoping that the driveshaft would pull out through the outside like the superduty does. I don't have access to the truck right now, or I would be crawling under it to see what was under there. I was hoping to know whether it was something I could do or if I should just have the front end shop do it when they do the alignment. Thanks for the input!
well, according to the manual, it's one bolt at the hub, and 4 at the diff, no major operation there. The way it's explained, rebuilding the joints is a fairly lengthy process, but I doubt it's very difficult to do, probably just takes awhile.
I'd recommend doing it yourself, you'd probably save over $200.
Above all, I'd get the shop manual and check for yourself. I've owned a Haynes manual for every vehicle I've owned, and I've saved thousands.
