Hey guys. I just wanted to let y'all know that this summer I had to replace my tranny, so I got a rebuilt one and put in a Jet shift kit to make the shifts firmer. This is an electronic shift kit that splices into the wiring harness and has 4 settings, stock, setting 1, setting 2 and racing. The higher the settings, the firmer the shifts. What a difference it made. I highly recommend it to anyone that has an auto tranny as it makes the shifts way firmer. I run my rig on setting 1 all the time and when I am hauling out wood or going up long hills where I will be changing gears I put it to setting 2 and the shifts are extremly firm and crisp. I use the racing mode very rarely, only when I want to pull off the line quick. It really snaps the gears in in this mode. Banks has a simular product, the Transcommand, but it is all electronic and ups the pressure when you need it. I prefered to go with the Jet one so I could control it. The price was $250 Canadian. Just thought I would let y'all know. Take er easy.
I got it ordered through Lordco. I am not sure if there is one in Ontario, but I think that Napa could order it too. I am pretty sure that you can order it factory direct from them, which in hindsight I should have done cause it would have saved me a few bucks. I talked with the tech fellows at the factory to make sure this is what I wanted, but I had a buddy working at Lordco who ordered it for me. I love the difference in shifting. My rig is the same, a hunting, wood getting rig, and for all the grunting I do, I like it.
There is a metal box on your trans toward the rear. It has some wires to it. This is part of your trans. If you have a Banks kit you will see another box in the same area and wires from that box to the original box. I am not familiar with other kits to be able to tell you what they look like.
I mounted my kit in the spot just below and to the right of the steering wheel, the place where it is great to hold your wallet or a pack of smokes. I put it here since with mine, I can manually set it to different shift levels and it had to be somewhere where I could do this - kind of like the Banks six gun dial but bigger. The Banks kit will be mounted to the frame of the truck on the passenger side with wires splicing into the wiring harness of the tranny which is also on the passenger side of the tranny.
jvc100, it is possible that your tranny has a shift kit right inside the tranny, this is the other style and the cheaper, at least as the kit goes, version. It cost some dough to put it in the tranny though. If your's shifts hard and you don't have a kit, you are lucky. My reman shifted great without the kit, but even better with it. It all depends what you like. If you like the softer shifts, then a kit is not the way to go. I wanted to avoid slipping between gears when shifting, and the kit did that for me. It took me about 1.5 to 2 hours to put in in the driveway.
