Unhappy speedometer/odometer/trip counter

1997 Ford Ranger: Sppedometer stops after about ten minutes of driving. This is not altered by hot or cold weather, wet or dry weather or on road or off road driving.

I changed the sensor in the rear diff but the same symptoms continue. Mechanics have checked the cable and the various connections to no avail.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a 98 Ranger and the same thing happened to me. The ford dealer said it was the speedo head and wanted $600 to replace it. I went to a salvage yard and bought a used instrument cluster for $50. I changed just the speedo-tach part. I put it part way back together and took it for a ride. After about 7 or 8 miles it stopped working. I then changed just the instrument cluster housing, it has the electrical circuits on the back. I used my original gauges and speedo to keep my milage right. I have driven about 2000 miles so far and it is still working. I think that was the problem.

Thomaswh3: Thanks for the information. I will give that a try and let you know what happens. This has stumped all of the mechanics that I talked with.

Your advice regarding the erratic performance of my sppedometer/odemeter was right on the money. I obtained a replacement instrument cluster housing and the problem has been resolved. Thanks a lot.
