Anyone have any idea how close is too close? I'm talking about one header tube and how close it comes to the steering box (power). Is there some type of insulation that would work in this area if I'm too close? Thanks
If it's closer than an inch it could get toasty down there. A reflective heat wrap is available (Summit is one place that carries it)that you could put on the gearbox itself...stay away from header wraps; bad news for headers. You can also get your headers ceramic coated to keep a lot of heat from radiating off...presently, that's what I'm doing.

For peace of mind, I would fab a small heat shield on the box. It won't cost 2 bucks, or take long to fab. I try this simple experiment when I have heat concerns. Run it as is first and check tempo. Let it cool and wrap a little aluminum foil from the kitchen on it. Try it again. Check the temp of the box. I have run woodstove pipes in the shed way too close to the wall by just tacking up a thin layer of sheet aluminum. Wall stays cold behind the heat shield. It seems that more reflective the better, but even satin aluminum helps a lot.
Problem with thicker insulating wraps is they hold the heat in. A PS box could overheat itself without any help from the headers. I don't even know if we are talking about PS in your situation.
I've been looking for several styles of headers to use on my truck. I've looked at other trucks with headers and they are all very close to either a motor mount, steering box, etc. I'm talking within centimeters of touching. In fact, most applications I've seen required some type of grinding or removing of material to make the header fit. It seems they don't have any problems with heat. They must know something we don't?
