ok, we have a 1995 f-superduty with the first-year powerstroke. it has like 87000 miles on it or so, and its lacking power IMO.
my uncle stupidly sprayed ether in the intake about 7-8 years ago (i guess, i cant remember). it wouldnt start so he ethered it. bad idea. a piece of plastic somehow ended up in the motor. (folks, i was about 7-9 at the time i only remeber some parts). it threw up ( )5-6 turbos between now and then, so our local diesel mech. replaced them. finally a good tech that i was referred to looked at it and gave it a total rehaul- about $3000 of stuff was broken, and the #7 piston was completely broken off from the crank and wasnt even working.. no wonder it vibrated so bad.
now it runs better, but still no where as good as i think it should. One mechanic supposedly added a 20hp chip (from 190 to 210 or 210 to 230, im not sure. it doesnt seem to have 230 hp. maybe 150 at the most. its a total dog when driving. you always have to shift it, no power anywhere it seems. its stock, other then the "Chip".
it also has an exhaust "tap" (its a tapping noise, i think maybe a broken manifold bolt...) when you drive it at any RPM..
also, you cant hear the turbo- no whine at all (unlike our 6.0). i think maybe something's obstructing the turbo causing poor performance. its on its 6th aftermarket turbo.. if the trubo could spin at normal speeds, would the whine appear and have power gains?
i know it shouldnt have the power of our 6.0 powerstroke, but it should have more then it has now.. or were they really that sluggish in 95? thanks.
should i crawl up on the motor and examine some things, i was thinking of taking the intake boot (from the turbo) and see if the trubo is spinning freely, and if the filter is clogged, etc...
That motor sounds really scewed up. It should impress you with the amount of power it has. It may be good just to swap in another remaned PSD. Mine runs like a scalded ape especially with the mods I have.
man 87,000 miles and 6 turbos??????? what is going on man? a broken off piston? what are you guys doing to your truck? throwing in a hand full of sand each oil change.
no, my uncle sprayed ether into the aircleaner and when it cranked over, it went POP, BANG!!! and a piece of the intake (plastic) went into the motor somehow, somewhere. i was only about 7 when all this happened, its all vague to me. the engine oil was contaminated internerally, it had 60% diesel fuel in it when the motor was fixed, so there was a serious problem. i still dont think its fixed...
but i do know its only used for a plow truck and hauling rock/stones, so its not gonna get too much invested( like a new motor) but i would like to crawl up there tomorrow and look at it.
about the turbos, i dont think it actually ate 6 of them up, i think the mech. replaced them for the hell-of-it..
btw, can you tell me what i could look on the motor for that would unleash some hidden power, thats already found on your machines but mine may be ineffective/not used? (like troubleshooting points?)
If its just a rock truck then just run er til she blows and find another truck thats in better condition. This is pretty bad, these motors will take a lot of abuse and still run good, this is a case where it just couldnt take it. Seriously, just dump it and find another truck thats in good order.
hmm.... i think the turbo may not be working... is it supposed to whine as much as the new 6.0's?? i took it for a short ride today and i cant hear the turbo. i havent been able to in a LONG time.. i took the intake off to check and i spun the turbo by hand, no restriction...
maybe the CAT is clogged? it idles alot, and when you finally get out on the road and dump into it, theres TONS of blue smoke, mostly unburnt fuel. i was thinking the cat is keeping the unburnt fumes between the turbo and the cat, and once pressure builds up, it forces its self out.
also, when towing loads at high RPM, there will be almost little to none exhaust smoke, then a giant burst of black smoke. i think somethings wrong with the cat. will that cause hellishly poor performance? i checked the air filter and its very dirty, i cleaned it with compressed air for time being, but im gettin a new one monday..
Blue smoke is oil burning. Maybe bad injector o-rings? I heard this will cause lack of power if they are pretty bad. As for turbo whine, they definetly aren't as loud as the 6 liters, and are fairly quiet without an intake or exhaust.

I agree 100%. You've already spent too much money on a losing proposition.
