Hello all, my 1999, 3.0 4x4 Ranger makes a sound similar to castanets (fast, clicking sound)for about 1-2 seconds upon starting. I've got 70,000 miles on it, recently changed the oil. could this be lifter noise ? it's been cold lately, could it be related to the cold ?
Thanks for the reply, I believe I had the problem prior to the oil change, and it seems to make the same sound in warmer weather (50 degree)as well. If it was lifter noise, wouldn't the clicking be constant ? sorry if I haven't provided all necessary info.
I believe I had the same noise in my '99. Have since traded and haven't heard it in my '00. I had the 2.5 in my '99 and it sounded like a "chirping" to me and only when cold like yours. (cold engine, not necessarily cold weather)
I don't think you're alone with this because I've seen discussion on this in the forum somewhere else. Maybe check belts and pulleys for slippage when cold or the A/C compressor warming up?
Ok, well, who's & what weight oil are you using & what area are you in.??
Is what your using the recommended viscosity range called out in your owners manual, for the temperture extreems you will expect to see during this oil change period??
Has the vehicle had regular on time oil & filter changes over those past 70K????
Who's oil filter are you using & what's the number on it??
We need to know these basic things to eliminate them as possible problem points.
