I have a 53 F-100 with a good old six volt system. Years ago, the wiper motor fried. I was able to solder back the wiring to the commutator. And the other windings look okay. I'll have the commutator turned and replace the brushes, and I think it might work just fine as long as it doesn't rain. There is a burned out piece on an insulated board that I do not have any experience or knowledge of. It is an electrical component that looks like a stiff white cylindrical cord over which is laid a spiral of thin wire. (This same kind of component exists on the back of my voltage regulator.) What are these things? The one on the wiper board is completely gone now...all that's left is the burn mark where it used to be. As far as I can tell, I got a red wire that ran to a terminal on the plate, and from there ran over to one of the brushes. This same terminal also connected to the unknown component and then to the windings. That's all I know. Which isn't much. I posted this same message on the electrical/ wiring forum to see what those folks might have to say about this.
Thanks for any help or comments. JVMCC

That "thing" is a wire wound resistor. It gets switched in and out to change wiper speed. I dont know the value, mine hasnt burned out so havent taken it apart. However a 6V FOMOCO car should have the same value or close enough.
Also check bone yards for a 54-5 F600; from my experience many big dump trucks had electric wipers.
To take it a step further 12V wipers would have a similar value resistor.
If someone can measure the current draw I can calculate a value. Then go buy a modern replacement at Mouser. www.mouser.com
