Transmission fluid level...please help

Hey everyone.
I have a 2001 4x4 Ford Ranger Edge 4.0 5 speed. I'm getting ready to go to the mountains tommorrow so I changed the oil and checked the tranny fluid level. Well I loosened the fill bolt to check it and fluid started pouring out of it. I quickly put the plug back in before it went everywhere. Now i'm afraid I don't have enough fluid and that i'm gonna fry the tranny. Is it supposed to be that full. I need your help asap. Thanks.

the oil should be at the bottom of the fill hole and not pouring out of it

It sounds like it was a bit overfilled. As was noted, it should be filled to the bottom of the hole. You're ok.

Ditto, the fluid is at the bottom of the hole. I know it sounds dumb but make sure the truck is level too when you check.
