reset check engine light

Is there any way to reset the check engine light besides actually fixing the problem?I've unhooked the battery but it only stays off for a couple of hours.

If the light keeps coming back on after you've left the battery disconnected for at least five minutes you should get the error code scanned. It's a recurring code.

You may be surprised that the code could be something simple to fix. I know they are anoying but if you just unhook the light or something, the problem (or problem perceived by the computer) will still be there. This could effect the way your vehicle runs because the computer will be making an adjustment for the perceived prob.

Hi to everyone, 4.0 Ford explorer 4x4....couple of days ago CEL came on. Code reader indicates P0230, " Fuel Pump Primary circuit malfunction ". Any hints on how to pimp point the problem.?? Is it fuel pump ( I hope not...). Yr prompt suggestion will be highly appreciated as I am In Venezuela, S.A and things down here are not as easy to solve as in the U.S

Bruce, I didn't see in your profile what vehicle you have. IF there are no faults reporting to the computer on a "first generation" EEC, the CEL will reset with the battery disconnected for a few minutes.

With second generation EEC's (some 1995's and 1996 and newer), the check engine light will reset after 3 complete drive cycles as long as there are no faults on the computer. Each manufacturer will define a "drive cycle" a little differently. Otherwise, it takes a code reader or scan tool to reset the light. If there are no faults reporting to the computer, it's memory will hold the fault for 40 drive cycles for maintenance recall if needed. The light will not be illuminated in this condition.

I'm not an auto mechanic, and this is my understanding on how it works based on my limited experience, but if your light remains on, this is an indication that you have a "real time" fault, no matter which system you have. There is lots of documentation on reading codes and troubleshooting procedures per the codes you get. I would suggest getting to the root of the problem if your light is on. Remember, "downstream" sensors may be reported as bad, when something else is causing the problem...eg; rich mixture may cause an oxygen sensor fault.

Hope this helps

I purchased a new egr as well but it came back on. Then I figuared out that the vacume line to the egr was pinched shut. Now it is all working fine.

I got the list of codes with the code reader I got. It reads most fords. Since I have four I figuared it was a good investment.

This is a lnk to the manual and the codes are listed in it. I think it also lists the ABS codes as well.

Thumbs up Cei

At least go to a Ford dealer and have them decode ypur system, and give you a detailed fault reading and repair estimate. You don't have to repair it there. It's a$100 wellspent and them you can decide what you want to do,repair it your self or let them do it.
