hey guys, my 98 eddie bauer explorer's subwoofer went out. I pryed out the plastic guard and took out the screws around the sub. But I cannot pry out the sub itself. It feels like its connected directly to the body of the car. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions and what size of sub am I dealing with in the 98 EB? I want to upgrade to another aftermarket sub, but I dont want to change out my amp or current system, any help on my questions would be very appreciated. thanks, mike
The sub is bolted to the enclsure from the backside and into the magnet.
You have to remove the enclosure first. To do that, you must at least partially remove the plastic panel. All of this can be done with just a philips screwdriver. No special tools needed. There are friction fittings holding the panel in place too, but you can use a pry bar to take them out gently, then reuse them. Once the enclosure is out, simply remove a BOLT (nice one, Ford) that is screwed into the back of the speaker magnet from the backside of the enclosure. BTW, you need to disconnect the wiring harness from the amp that runs to the speaker (you'll see it) in order to remove the enclosure from the body.
thanks for the reply, but how do I get off those little plastic things without breaking them? Are the screws right underneath the little plastic "disk" things?
I am sorry to revive an old topic, but I am in the same situation as busters444, I know how to remove the sub, but where can you buy one to fit. Could I buy and 8 inch subwoofer and skip the bolt in the back part??
