I have a bright red, 99 XLT Super Cab, 4 dr, with flare (splash) sides, Sport package, and plastic bed liner. The truck is near perfect shape, inside and out. Only 16K on it. The only problem is that I don’t want a RED truck. I really want a BLUE or Charcoal color. I see blue and black Rangers, and envy them.
I don’t have much money, and I don’t want to walk into a nightmare…but…
What kind of cost and I looking at? Is it harder to paint over Ford’s bright red, than any other color? What kind of shop should I use (Ford, private)? Am I decreasing the value of my truck? Is the Fall a bad time to try this? Any tips or recommendations are appreciated!
Thanks
On a truck that new, you would be decreasing the value if you change colors. Don't repaint a perfectly good factory paint. If I could absolutely not stand the color, I too would trade for one I liked better. (Probably be cheaper, too)

The only reason you want a dark truck is because you haven't had to wash it daily to keep it clean. You repaint the one you have now and you will need to repaint the inside of the doors so that they match the outside. Since you are low on cash - be very happy with your red. The guys in the darker trucks are jealous of your red one.
If you are looking for a quick paint job I would look at more of an industrial paint job company like maaco. They don't do the best job in the world but they might just get it done for about 1000-1500. I would suggest midnight blue, but the care for this paint job is alot, you need to wash it about once a week to keep it looking good.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Jan-02 AT 05:07 PM (EST)]Let's think about this one...I am a body repairman of 4 years, and let me tell you, you are gonna spend more on a paint job for that truck then you would to just pay the finance charge of the truck you are trading and get one you like. But, as has been mentioned, lighter color trucks are more forgiving when it comes to hiding those little dings and scratches. I have a white one and I too have to wash it about once a week to keep it looking clean, but it still hides the fine scratches from road hazards and such. So, my advice as a body man would be to just trade and you will come out of it saving money in the long run and if you are getting the exact same truck, just in a different color, you shouldn't have to pay much more. Just my $.02.

It seems to me Stefan, you might have thought about the color issue before you purchased it. It will cost a great deal of money to fix the problem. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
