The valve covers on my 66 352 are stuck to the heads. I have removed all 5 bolts and staples. How do I get them off without destroying them. PO claimed that they had never been replaced cover or Gasket.
Take a BFH (Big F**&n Hammer) and beat them off. Usually a nice sized rubber mallet will do the trick. Just whack em side to side and fore, aft. No problem!!!
Anyway, they can be very stubborn if they have not been off in 20 or 30 years. Usually a rubber mallet and a confident whack will get things loose. If you get desparate, use a flathead screwdriver. You might make a small dent, but you can seal that with RTV later.... You might try it with the engine hot, it it's running.....
Yes staples. If all else fails use the sawsall. I find a block of wood used with the mallet helps a bit. The wood helps prevent little dents in your valve covers if it matters. If they are virgins they will be stuck pretty good. G.
Actually, there were several gaskets and seals on many vehicles that are stapled to hold them in place. Window seals, Wheel well rubbers, valve covers. They actually used staples to hold them in place. Shot em right thru the sheet metal. Although I must admit, I can't remember seeing them on my valve covers.
I would consider that, regardless of what the PO says, there might be a possibility that the gaskets were Permatexed on, or something like that. You should be able to work a box-cutter blade or something similar around at least part of the perimeter to give you a spot to start with your mallet or prying instrument of choice.
