I pulled my 460 out to sell to a guy for a pretty good price. It has a flywheel for an automatic on it. He pulled his 460 out of his truck and his has a 4 speed manual. The problem is this. I want to make sure we can use his flywheel and pressure plate from his engine without damaging mine. I have alot of money tied up in it and dont want it screwed up. I have already been paid but he is a friend and even though he heard it run I will feel bad if something happens to it. He seems to think it will work and I am not sure. His 460 is from a 86 truck and mine is from a pickup I believe around 1978 although I am not sure. Anyone know for certain? I am not sure if the flywheel has a zero balance and the harmonic balancer does the external balancing or not. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Ok, I talked to a guy that said they changed the balance around 1980. Not sure if this is true though. He said if we used the 86 flywheel it would vibrate and eventually knock the bearings out. He said also that the 86 was balanced with a counterweight behind the damper. Mine does not have this counterweight. I am looking for any numbers on the block which may help identify what year it is. Anyone know where to look or how many numbers I am looking for?
The weight your refering to is called a hatchet. And yes you will destroy the engine if he bolts his flywheel to it. You can buy netrual balance flywheels or have his taken to a machine shop to rebalance it to zero. The hatchet is located directly behind the harmonic balancer. You have a spacer sleeve in place of the hatchet. The block # is above the starter. That will tell you what year block you have though and that is about it.
Do you know of any place I can purchase this flywheel? How many teeth does it have to have? Also I am hoping he can reuse his pressure plate and clutch disc off of the 86 as it is almost new. I wonder if it would just be cheaper to rebalance his old flywheel. So if we balance it to zero then it can be reinstalled on the motor I sold him? Thanks for responding.
L&L is a good place to buy the flywheel but they are pricey. The clutch should work with the flywheel from L&L. Whatever you do do not put a flywheel on the motor that is from 79 or newer
i did not know this but a ford 360 has the same teeth and balance. It has to be an older one though. The only problem is you need a spacer then for the starter to work without grinding. He put it on and can feel no vibration. Starting without the shim though is kind of rough and i told him he better get the shim soon. Thanks everyone for the info.
