I have a 97 F150 with a five speed and the factory hauling package. I've heard lots of talk about Ford using a weak Mazda transmission in this truck. How can I tell if I have the Mazda transmission?
The Mazda is the only standard they put in 97 and up F150s. As long as you're fairly careful with what you're hauling you shouldn't have any problems. Dont go over what it's rated to tow.
As long as you take care of the tranny, it will be fine. They've been using them in F150's since '87, but like RacerGuy said, it's the only manual tranny that comes in the '97-up F150's.
Allumium case, auto trans fluid for lube, no true low 1st gear or low Reverse gear. I have one in my 99 F150 Supercab and tow over the rated cap. all the time, but I change the fluid every year with synthetic lube and I don't abuse the clutch.
99F150 Thanks for the advice. I was a little worried, I'm over the ford suggested weight... hard not to be... its nice to hear that it can work if its maintained
