97 Explorer AC quit working

The air conditioner in my 97 explorer quit blowing cold air. The controls seem to be working fine. When idleing the compressor clutch will engage every seven second, work for 2 or 3 seconds then disengage. The hose leading into the evaporator is slightly cool while the hose exiting the evaporator (the bigger tube on top that leads to the accumulator) is room temp. There is oil on the accumulator/drier. I'm quessing that I'm low on freon, but the oil on the accumulator makes me think I'd be wasting my time to recharge the system with out replacing some parts. Any suggestions?

Sounds like,,,

I think your answering you own "?" if you have an a/c leak detector and if theirs enough freon in the system check for a leak, it to me seems like you are low and do to a leak, good luck. TNTsF-250

Yup, sounds like a leak. The oil came out with the escaping refrigerant. Rapid cycling of the compressor is a sign of undercharge, so that further reinforces it.
