Tie Rod Ends

Am I the only person to have failure of two Tie Rod Ends? One of which was while my 2000 expedition was underway. With no grease fittings, it would seem that this must happen often.

Tie rods and other suspension fittings have been sealed for many years. They last longer that way 90% of the time since they don't get dirt forced into them by incompetent lube tech's. It is possible to make them last longer if they have fittings but that is not the case in most applications.

Most failures will be found during inspections. If the vehicle does not have regular inspections and has suffered some damage from road debris, abuse, etc then premature failure can happen. Turning the wheels without the vehicle moving also puts a lot of stress on chassis parts and is considered to be abuse.

Regular inspections is one of the best reasons to have your vehicle maintained at a dealership or regular shop rather than a "quick lube" place. A good shop mechanic will "eyeball" a lot of things under a vehicle.

Funny, when the first one failed, the dealership tried to claim that I had run in a ditch to cause the problem. The only shortcomming to their argument was that there was no dirt under the truck. I tried to have them replace all of the tie rod ends and was told that it was a freak occurance and the others had been inspected and were "just fine". 2 months later we were towed back in to the shop with a broken tie rod end. Again the other two have been inspected and are "just fine"

I received a notice from Ford the other week regarding the tie rod ends on my 02 Expy and to have my dealer inspect them. I don't think there has been a recall issued. Anyone else received this notice in the mail from Ford?

Happy Thanksgiving. I received this notice. But the notice just gave instructions on what to do when a mechanic inspects them. I'm not under warranty anymore so that may be the difference.

I got a notice from Ford about 6 weeks ago. It showed how to check the tie rod ends but warned that it should only be done by a qualified shop (then why did they send detailed illustrated instructions?). Also, the letter I received was quick to point out that this is not a recall, just a service reminder....yeah, right.
