Years ago, I took a welding course in Phoenix. It was held at the Deer Valley High School Vocational Center (Vo-Tech, as they called it), at the high school, which is up in NW Phoenix, off Union Hills Rd and 43rd Ave, if I remember the location correctly (it's been a few years...). The course was offered through the community college as I remember it. It was probably through Glendale Community College, as that's where I went at that time. GCC is down off Dunlap (Olive) Ave and I think it was 59th Ave. They had new machines at that time, mostly Miller, and even had TIG and a plasma cutter, as well as MIG and of course stick and gas. They offered 2 or 3 course levels in succession and there were other types of courses at the Vo-Tech as well, like auto body and a few others. I only took the welding.
Also around that time, there was a welding school called ABC Welding, down south somewhere I think. I went there one time looking for info on the tuition costs. I still remember their TV ads, showing the 'welding school graduate' pulling up in his red Lamborghini Countach. The idea that a welder could afford a Lamborghini was a bit rediculus, but the advertisement was memorable.
If you're not in the Northwest area of Phoenix, I imagine Phoenix College probably has something similar to offer as GCC did back then. Also might want to check with UTI (Universal Technical Institute), which used to be in Glendale back then, or even MMI (Motorcycle Mechanics Institute), over by Sunnyslope (North-central Phoenix). They may not offer a course, but the people there may know of other places that do.
