The drivers side mirror on my dads 1992 F150 is the black plastic style. Its been broke for a couple of years where it pivots. We've had it taped up to keep it from falling off. I was in a junkyard on monday and found one for $35 so I bought it. We put it on yesterday and it broke off in the same spot as the orginal mirror. It flew off while my dad was on the expressway going to work. I hate those cheap plastic mirrors. I like the old style that is on my 82 F100. The ones that are aluminum and bolt to the top and middle of the door. I love ford trucks, but sometimes things like this tick me off. Why did ford use such cheap plastic on things like this?? Anyone else have these mirrors break?
I have the originals on my 92 and have had no problems. Did you make sure to bolt on the support bar to the interior door panel? Your junkyard took you. Those mirrors are $24 new in the box on eBay right now. Go check out item #7935550530 on eBay.
I bought my truck from my brother. He broke the passenger mirror once 4-wheelin. He replaced it. When I bought it, that mirror wasn't real tight and it bounced around. That's how I found out about that mounting bolt. It had come loose. It looks like it originally had some lock-tite on it so I put some more and tightened it again. Seems to be holding. I'm just guessing that maybe yours is bouncing around due to loose screws and this is causing it to snap off. Lock-tite them screws and it won't bounce anymore. That's all I can think of. These mirrors on mine have been on there for years.
