Guys i really need some help on this one. I bought a new clutch set yesterday and now i need to put it in. My chilton's manual basically says to take clutch out, put new one in, go. I need some real directions!!! This is the last day i will have any time to do it for the next two and a half weeks so i need to do it now.. this old worn out clutch is driving me nuts!!!
well, i will try to help...remove the battery cable! then you need to remove the drive shaft, loosen all the engine/starter bolts, remove the gear shifter, remove the cluth cable or hydraulic line (this requires a special tool, you can try using a couple of screwdrivers but be carefull) remove the back-up light wiring connector, speedometer cable, double check that every thing is disconected from the trans at this point. i might be missing a few things, also all steps are not in order, this shouldnt matter though. have a friend help you at this point. place a jack under the trans, use a block of wood or something so you dont damage it, remove the cross member, now slide the trans back, carefull its heavy! once its out remove the pressure plate by evenly undoing the bolts, dont let it fall on you! also the clutch is inside and will fall out when the presure plate is pulled away. you should now get the flywheel turned. it is highly recomended. if you can,t then at least use some emery cloth to clean it up. i would have it turned though!!! also replace the release/throw out bearing. inspect the pilot bearing, this is located in the rear ot the crank shaft. you will need a speacial tool to get it out. you can try packing it with grease and poundind the clutch allignment tool into it. this will sometimes pop it out. if you do install a new one make sure to grease it. if not at least grease the old one. to install.... place the clutch onto the flywheel and push the allignment tool through it untill it is tight, bolt on the new pressure plate, tightin each bolt a little at a time so the fingers dont bend too much. torque to specs!!! if your truck has the internal slave cylinder inspect it at this time, because the trans has to come out to replace it. put a light coat of grease on the release bearing and the input shaft so it will slide in easier. it might take a while, sometimes they slide right in, sometimes it will take 2 hours to get it in. its just like that when your laying on your back working on a car. hope this helps a little. just remember to torque every thing, and if you cheese out now on the parts it could bite you in the butt later. good luck! oh yeah, if its a 4x4 then you will have a few xtra steps like the transfer case and front drive shaft.
