i've always noticed tons of play in my driveline, but i had never pinpointed it.
in transmissionneutral with the t-case in 2h , the driveshaft from the tranny to the t-case was tight, but the shaft from the t-case to the rear end was loose as a goose...it can turn at least a quarter way around(and i can feel it come around and grab while clutching). since it is attatched to the rear-end, it should be relatively tight because of the gears, but it was definitely abnormal...are my rear-end gears worn as well as the t-case...a combo or just the rear end or just the t-case?
A 1/4-turn doesn't sound THAT excessive. As long as you're not hearing it banging around back there, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Might want to first check the slip yoke and u-joints for slop and go from there.
I've been dealing with the same thing in my 88 f150. There is some clunking associated with mine though, especially when shifting gears. I opened up the rear diff. cover a couple days ago to find that the spider gears were shot and a good amount of metal chips and flakes in the lube. It seems like this may be the source of the slop, but I'll see after I replace the spider gears. You may want to change your fluid and inspect the gears.
