The roll pin sheared twice in my 85.The entire distributor was replaced and the car idles fine, but now hesitates. Any ideas why the roll pin would shear?
This is stretching it a bit, but I think it's odd that quite a few people have problems with roll pin failure. The most obvious source is brittleness induced by cold working. The brittleness takes away from the pin's ability to give a little under acceleration. Cold working is performed by the action of pressing the pin. Some aids to help alleviate as mush cold working as possible is to freeze the pin prior to install, insure the holes in the shaft and the gear are aligned and the same size, use some lube on the pin prior to pressing it in. I used to work in a place that had a similar symptom with electrical motors and belt pulleys - the problem ended up being corrected by running a drill throught the sets of holes to insure proper size and not forcing the pin to quickly.
You also have to consider the load put on the pin by the oil pump. Cold starts with heavy oil, hi volume oil pumps if installed in the engine exceed the design strenght
of the pin. I have seen dist. gears milled off by the cam gear as a result.
Thanks for your replies. As far as the heistation, we're going to replace the intake, exhaust and throttle body gaskets. Also, i may drain the gas tank and rebuild the carb.Anything else ? The truck acts like it is going do die any second when you are in first and second.
Also, I've had three trucks in the last 20 years with 300's and I have never had a dizzy roll pin shear. I would suspect your having oil pump problems too! You might also look over the distributor gear closely for any damage.
