My'93 bronco with 302-97,000 started to thump when pulling out. I can feel three or four thumps when pulling out. It has been doing this for a few months. Is this a slipping tranny. I also sometimes feel a thump when stopping.I also have been having this lingering problem for about a year that when my headlights and or heater are on and I come to a stop the voltage drops on my gauge and my lights dim. I had another '89 bronco and it never did this. I put a new alternator on last year since this usually causes this kind of problem and cleaned connections with no change. Also I notice when putting tranny in drive or reverse this happens. It's almost like too much strain is on engine and alt. can't keep up with demand or idle is too slow?Aslo, now I'm having trouble with hard starting on occasion? I had a real brain teaser this time last year with a fuel pump that would let me sit depending on how long the truck sat. Now it does something similar but it is not as bad. Truck turns over but acts like it's not getting gas again? I also had a bad fuel reg. when the pump went out? Also, my rear main seams to be leaking, is this common on these? My '89 leaked also.Dig in folks.
Its getting to the age where bushings wear out. Look under the truck in the area you hear the thumping and look for worn out or torn bushings in the spring mounts and sway bars as well as the usual radius arm bushings. Twist the driveshaft and look for excessive play in the joints too, but that's more like a knock than a thump. As for the lights dimming and hard starting: how old and what size battery are you using? You should have at least a Group 27 battery or the biggest one you can fit in the tray. Check the condition of the ground cable from the battery to the block and if necessary add a new 8 gauge ground cable from the battery to the frame as well. Many light dimming problems can be traced to a bad ground source. Of course the hot cable has to be in good shape too. Good luck.
I have a 96 Bronco 5.8 and I also get the thumping. Except mine will only thump twice, twice when taking off from a stop and twice when coming to a stop.
I'm not real mechanical but have replaced numerous bushings and the u-joints but I can't get rid of the noise. Any other ideas out there?
