my engine is having problems cranking. it is getting plenty of fuel and spark. i have reset the timing and it cranks fine, but after a few cranks it will not start anymore. so i have to reset the timing. it has pertronix ignition and the carb is a holley 600 vac sec. i think it may be the timing chain. any idea's on what it could be and how i can fix it. thanks,
Chad
Not to make fun or anything, but did you tighten the distributor hold down after you timed it? Have to get the simple stuff out of the way first.
It's not the timing chain. If it was the engine would not start at all after the first or second time this happened. Is the oil pressure doing ok? Reason I ask is that the oil pump is driven off the distributor.
yeah i tightened the hold down. oil pressure is fine. it will just turn over and i will pull the #1 plug and get the timing close crank it up and maybe 2 miles down the road it cuts off again and i have to reset the timing again. i haven't been able to drive it in about 2 weeks because of this. i was just thinking that it was the chain because i can hear a rattle when the engine starts running.
i'm about to go insane. it sucks to have about 3 grand in it and it not crank. the dist. is the original one, do ya'll think that something in it could be not turning right? i'm running out of idea's. well i got nothing to do until Monday, off for Thanksgiving, so i'll be working on the truck.
Starter maybe going bad? Or if it's an aftermarket hi torque mini or similar maybe the hookup is not correct. Some of the newer ones can bypass the firewall solinoid having one on the starter like the GM style. Just a thought, G.
I had a 69 Mustang with a 300 6cyl do the same thing one time. I would set the timing, start it up, drive a short distance and it would quit and wouldn't start again. I would bring No. 1 to TDC, set the timing, start it up and drive a short distance again. Turns out the distributor drive gear pin was sheared off. I pulled a staple from a nearby fence post, used a hacksaw in my toolbox to cut it to length, peened the ends over with a hammer and drove away. This is NOT the recommended way to fix it, but it got me home. Pull your dizzy and check the gear. It's easy to do, and it sounds like you are setting the timing anyway, so what have you got to lose?
Another true story from Redneck Engineering 101. Hey, Scoot...What would you and the boys have done if we actually roped that cow?? Or was it a goat, sheep....Wasn't Jake that had the deep boots on???
Check the dist. gear...Just make sure you clock it right when you stuff it back in.

It was a sheep, and it's virtue was in grave danger!
I ran into a simular cituation...turned out my header was heating up my starter...and making it drag....i put a heat sheild on....and learned to live with it.
put a new dist. in and i will tell how it goes sometime today. the gear on it was about half the size of the gear on the new one.thats a lot of wear so i'm hoping thats what it is, but if it's not i've always got ya'll to ask. oh and a little word of advice, be careful with the oil pump shaft. it is a pain to get out of the oil pan.
