1975 engine size

Hey all... Great site here. So it seems I've purchased yet another ford, and I guess to my families dismay I am indeed a ford lover. Then I've never been one to conform. Anyway, I have a 1975 f250 and have been told by previous owner that it does not have original motor. First guess would be that V.I.N. says it to be a 390, but motor is a big block. So... Where can I find the serial numbers on the motor to find out. I've been told it is near the starter. The valve covers say it is a 429, but I've learned not to trust anything that can be unbolted. Appreciate any help, and hope to help with any info I may came across to return the favpr.

Look at the sparkplugs

do they look like this / / / /

or like this / / \ \ .

Casting numbers ! No serial numbers on engine parts for trucks.

Look for the 3 rd character in the first 4 characters of the casting numbers.
A , O, T or V

They look like this: //// And the casting number on the head is D2VE-AA (date number?) Yeah sorry...casting numbers. First time dealing with the bigger blocks...What makes the difference between the 429 and 460.

Thanks again,
Thom

I guess I could also ask a truck specifis question here. Since I just checked out the FAQ's. What makes these trucks a camper special, and how do I find out if mine is. It is an F250, acording to VIN, super cab, 4X2, two gas tanks, the shorter box- 6', sway bars. I will post a pic sometime if I can.

Thanks again,
Thom

429/460. you will need to measure the stroke to know which one. pull #1 plug and put it at TDC, measuer the piston height with a piece of stiff wire, then turn it 180 degrees and measure again. teh difference will be the stroke. (3.85 for the 460, 3.59 for the 429) both have a 4.36 bore, and share all parts except the crank/pistons.

i doubt your truck is a camper special cause it's a shortbed but the way you can tell is that they have an extra leaf on the left side i believe. this is to hold the extra weight of the waste water and fresh water. more than likely the engine you have is a 429 or 460. the parts are interchangable except pistons and crank. I believe it could be a trailer special because of sway bars but usually thiose are longbeds as well.

Hey when I bought my truck it had a 390 in it but I was not sure. I think it was swaped out of something else, but anyways how I found out if my engine was a 390 is by the casting numbers. Just look on the bottom of your block in the front and look for some letters. mine said C6ME-A which is a 390.

C6ME could be a 410 merc too... 1966 car block

crank numbers/measure the stroke is the only real way to tell

Howdy. If you'll post all the info off both labels (one plastic covered paper, one metal) from the driver's door and door jamb, I'll decipher all of it for you from my 75 factory repair books.

Please include all the labeling letters above the stamped or printed info like:

WB
155

That way we can nail it as close as possible to what you actually have (or at least what it came with).

Yeah thanks. The truck was supposed to have a 390, but someone put in a different motor. I am putting new heads on it along with new seals, so I will look at the crank #'s. Maybe even measure the stroke before I disassemble.

Thanks again all... I will post photos soon

If you're pulling the heads, then you can measure the stroke with them off.

This thread will be moving to the FE engine forum.

Yeah I realize that, but I do drive the truck and I want to make sure I order the right parts before I tear it down. While I've found that the engines are the same with exception to crank and pistons it makes it easier for me to order the gasket set and other parts. Piece of mind I guess. I also like to have as many replacement parts sitting in front of me as I can when I tear into a motor. Keeps me focused I guess - I tend to multitask more than I should. Anyway thanks again and please do move this thread to its proper home

Thanks, Thom

D2 would definetly suggest a 429. FoMoCo never put a 429 in a truck, the easiest way to tell if its a 429 or a 460 is to look at the motor mounts. Car ones will look like two triangles connected with a big bolt. Truck ones look like a upside down U and have four bolts connecting them to the crossmember.

I'm pretty sure only big lincolns got the mighty 460, and several other Mercs and Fords got the 429. You most likely have a 429.
