86 2.9 ranger 4x4 - I recently replaced my clutch, throw out & pilot bearing, and had the flywheel re-surfaced. Prior to this nothing was wrong with my slave cylinder. After putting the vehicle back together (yes i replaced the clutch with proper side against the flywheel), and bleeding the system (PITA), I have plenty of pedal, but the slave cylinder seems to not be engaging the clutch at all. I get a kind of crunchy sound as I push the pedal, almost as if a spring were slipping. What are the signs of a faulty slave cylinder, and what could this sound be? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
To the best of my knowledge you either have not got the slave bled and are hearing air or you put the trowout bearing in backwards. The large diameter goes towards the clutch. good luck. i hope this helps.
Well , I know the throw out is put in correctly, so it must not be bled properly, which is what I wanted to hear, rather than tear down your tranny again ( which may be easier then bleeding this bad boy). Thanx for the input, I was hoping the noise i was hearing was air in the system and not mechanical malfunction.
on 94 with 4.0 we R&Rd the system and then had hard shifting problems. Replaced the master cyl and could not get it to work, returned and replaced the master and had the same problem. Went back to the shop that did the trans rebuild and he told me that the ford rangers etc were a PITA to bleed that it has taken him up to 2 hours to do it. Well we tried and tried got some movement on the slave but it still wouldn't work. Finally pulled the circlip in the master pulled the piston out just a bit to let the air out and upon reassembly had instant clutch.
Could be that you need to do the same to get a good bleed. Just be careful, and let a little fluid by with the piston pulled. I didn't try to bleed after this but would recommend at least once more.
