I have a 2001 Ford F-150. The brake lights have quit working. We have changed out all the fuses and bulbs but the lights still don't work. The third brake light works, the turn signals work but just not the two "major" brake lights. Help!!! I travel a lot and need to get this fixed in a hurry!
Since the third light works, then that cancels out the fuses. Now I know its not likely, but do check the bulbs. They have been known to go out at the same time. A power surge could of blown em out. Other than that, I would start at the back end and start disconnecting and re-connecting each plug in the wire loom heading forward. Could just be a loose connection.
Thanks so much. We have changed the bulbs out and the fuses and the problem is still there. Can you buy the multifunction switch at a parts store or do I have to go to a dealership? Is this something hard to fix and should I get a professional to fix it?
Thank you for all your help - I am going to get on the phone to my dealership!! Time to take out the wallet. This is a wonderful board with great response time. Have a great Thanksgiving.
What I found was the Tilt down to lowest level and cold weather had caused my multiswitch plug (round locking plug) to back out of the switch part way in the steering column causing the turning signals, hazards and brakes to progressivley get worse ending up in complete failure except the third light.
Remove a few screws on the bottom of the steering column (you dont have to remove key switch for this because you arent removing any components) and spread it apart enough to find a grey (it was on mine) plug on the top of the column in the back left side and see if its loose. It is right behind the turn signal control.
What led me to this was if the wheel wasnt tilted all the way down it didnt have this problem.
Well, it was the multifunction switch. I took it into the dealership at 7:30 wednesday morning and they had it fixed by 9:00. I am sure it only took them about 10 minutes to do it! I think the part only cost 7.00 but of course labor was 55.00 an hour with a minimum hour requirement. The head mechanic just looked stunned when I was telling him about what was going on and I told him it was the multifunction switch. Thanks to you guys!! Have a wonderful holiday season
